All About OMR Sheets
OMR Sheets are special printouts containing circles or elliptical bubbles or boxes used as marking areas where the candidate marks using a blue/black pen or pencil.
OMR Sheet is also known as: OMR Answer Sheet, OMR Test Sheet, MCQ Test Sheet, ORS, Objective Response Sheet, Oval Sheet, Bubble Sheet etc.
The OMR Sheet Reader software is a software solution that reads these specific circles and bubbles and converts the information into OMR data.

What are the software and hardware differences between OMR and desktop scanners?
OMR
- An OMR form can have the bubbles very close together, making it possible to collect more data in the same space.
- On an OMR form, the bubbles need to be completely filled in on these forms.
- An OMR form requires Timing Marks on it (small rectangular marks on one side of the page).
- Scanning copies of OMR forms is not acceptable. They have to be originals.
- OMR readers cannot deal with inexact tolerances, so printing of forms must be very precise. Readers require that forms be printed exactly based on the absolute edge of the paper.
- OMR readers can perform mark discrimination, thereby being able to determine erasures from darker marks
- OMR ink read scanner can read pencil or ink. An OMR pencil read scanner can only read pencil marks.
- Can obtain a higher speed of scanning
- Can be left unattended
- Can have a separate hopper for rejected forms to automatically be sent and dealt with later.
- Can capture much more data on an OMR form reducing paper costs.

- A desktop/image form needs to have more “white space” around the bubbles.
- On a desktop form, ? or < are more acceptable.
- Copies of desktop forms are acceptable.

- A desktop scanner can read pencil and ink.
- A desktop scanner cannot perform mark discrimination. Multiple marks in an area, when not allowed, will be flagged as potential problems.
OMR Vs Image Scanning
Many schools are considering image scanning as an alternative to tried-and-true Optical Mark Read (OMR) technology for test scoring. Is this a better solution? Not necessarily. Image scanning hardware and software offer valuable features, but most are wasted in both high-volume and routine test scoring situations. Read on to discover why OMR technology remains the workhorse on campuses nationwide.
Scanning everything versus reading test answers In a testing environment, image scanning, or “plain paper scanning,” combines a well-known scanning technology with robust software. If you’ve ever turned old family photos into digital images, you’ve used this technology. For testing, the software “reads” the data positions on scanned images of answer sheets by comparing them to a template. In contrast, OMR scanning (most closely associated with the Scantron? brand) requires students to fill in bubbles, usually with a #2 pencil. Their answer sheets are fed through a reader with sensors that recognize the marks on the forms.
OMR is faster and easier An OMR system operates “on the fly,” processing forms as they are fed through the machine. In image scanning, the images have to go through a reading process and if verification is required, the user must stop and make corrections before the scoring process can continue. This slows the scoring process and increases the chance of subjectivity.
OMR processes large quantities The input trays of most OMR scanners can hold 200 to 500 forms, while most image scanners at schools have a capacity of just 50 to 100 forms. The user needs to stand by to add forms as necessary, essentially nullifying the auto-feed feature.
OMR is the most accurate OMR is the fastest and most accurate data collection technology for capturing closed-end responses. While both image and OMR technologies are capable of achieving 99.9% accuracy, only a traditional OMR system can achieve that accuracy without user intervention.

Stick with the no-trouble bubble!If the primary use of the scanner is to capture bubbled responses, then traditional OMR solution is the best choice. In most cases, OMR is superior to image scanning in price, speed, accuracy and ease of use. In fact, image scanning can offer more irritation than innovation in everyday test scoring.

The Optical Mark Reader
The Optical Mark Reader is a device the "reads" pencil marks on NCS compatible scan forms such as surveys or test answer forms. If that all seems overly technical to you, just think of it as the machine that checks multiple choice computer forms. In this document The Optical Mark Reader will be referred to as the scanner or OMR. The computer test forms designed for the OMR are known as NCS compatible scan forms. Tests and surveys completed on these forms are read in by the scanner, checked, and the results are saved to a file. This data file can be converted into an output file of several different formats, depending on which type of output you desire.

10 Question Green Form

These forms can be purchased at the campus bookstore or the convenience store located in the union. The green form has ten choices for each answer and the blue form has five choices for each answer. When students fill out these forms it is important that the name field is filled out with the appropriate letters filled in below the name. See the Example of a Correct Student Scan Form for more information. If this is not done the scanner will report an error. Also make sure none of the forms are damaged. Damaged forms cannot be checked. There are two sets of preprinted marks that help the scanner read the form. They are the "Skunk Marks" and the "Timing Marks". See the picture below for the location of these marks.

It is important that you use NCS compatible forms as the OMR is specifically designed to check these forms. The five and ten response NCS forms are the standard forms used for surveys and tests. If you wish to use other NCS forms, contact Information Technology at 766-2939 to find out what support we can offer.

For test grading this will be ananswer key, for teacher evaluations this will be a form filled out with the instructor’s information, and for surveys this may be general information about the survey.
Once this is completed you will need to go to the Information Technology Center to process the forms. The OMR's are located in room 101A. When you come into the lab go behind the lab assistant’s desk. The OMR's and the computers connected to them are located there on the table just left and right of the color printer. Printed versions of the OMR istructions explaining how to scan, process, and print are located in a binder near each machine. Also inside each binder is a printed version ofScanning Errors. It is a handy reference when problems occur. If you wish to print on the scanned forms, please contact the fulltme staff during regular business hours.

Those links will take you to the How To Pages of processing each type. Before you start it is important to note that the system is case sensitive. You will need to type in all responses exactly how they appear in the How To Pages for the type of forms you will be scanning. If you do not, problems will occur. Sit down at the computer and follow the directions for the type of forms you will be scanning. When you start, the computer prompt should be Count>. If not ask the computer lab assistant for help; they will correct the problem. In the second step of the How To Pages the directions specify to accept the defaults. Advanced users and users with more than one answer key may want to change these. For directions on changing these defaults see theChanging Scan Defaults page. Most users will not need to do this. We recommend pressing return on the keyboard at each prompt to accept the defaults. After completing the first few steps in the How To Pages for your form type, the computer will prompt you to PUT THE STACK OF FORMS IN THE INPUT TRAY. Meaning it is time to load the scanner with your scan forms.

Actual scanning occurs on the Transport bed. Once a form is scanned it comes to rest in the Output Stacker. The Operator Panel displays the scanner status and any error messages. If the scanner stops scanning in the middle of a job check the Operator Panel for information.To load the scanner place your forms in the hopper so that they are readable to you and the timing marks are on the same side as the Operator Panel. Loading The OMR
Make sure to place the forms under the bar (located on the same side as the Operator Panel) and that they are aligned properly. The answer key scan form should be on top of the stack. Next look at the Operator Panel. If the Operator Panel reads "Count", you may begin scanning. If it does not, ask the lab assistant for help. Once you press return on the keyboard forms will begin running through the scanner. If an error occurs (i.e. a form becomes jammed in the Transport Bed) read the error message on the computer console then consult the Exam Instructions or Survey Instructions for the solution.Optical mark reader (OMR)
Optical Mark reading (OMR) is a method of entering data into a computer system. Optical Mark Readers reads pencil or pen marks made in pre-defined positions on paper forms as responses to questions or tick list prompts. The OMR data entry system contains the information to convert the presence or absence of marks into a computer data file.
The OMR technology could be used if data is to be collected from a large number of sources simultaneously, a large volume of data must be collected and processed in a short period of time, information mainly comprises the selection of categories or "tick box" answers to multiple- choice questions.
The main advantages of OMR technology are as follows:
OMR scanning is fast: An OMR scanner can maintain a throughput of 2000 to 10,000 forms per hour. This activity can be controlled and processed by a single PC workstation, which can handle any volume the scanner can generate. Increasing the throughput simply requires upgrading the scanner. Double entry is not required.
OMR scanning is accurate: It consistently provides unmatched accuracy when reading data, exceeding the accuracy of expert key-entry clerks because it eliminates transcription errors.
OMR scanning is cost effective: With OMR technology, organizations can accomplish a wide variety of administrative tasks rapidly and accurately from a central location, with minimum initial and ongoing outlay of funds.
OMR scanning is easy to implement and support : Compared to many PC network installations, OMR scanners' need for ongoing technical support is minimal. OMR scanners also solve most system availability issues: data can be recorded on an OMR form even when a PC or network goes down. If questions arise, a source form is available to validate results.
